Down the Stretch

Here we are, coming down the stretch, and what a season it has been. We had an average April, a great May, slumped a bit before the trading deadline as Ned Colletti and his staff made some outstanding moves and now, as we hold a three game lead in the National League West going into September, are hotter than a Dominican trumpet player.

This really is an exciting time for the NL West, because there is still lots of baseball to play. There are no guarantees in our game, there are no awards handed out in August. You can still throw a blanket over our division, and over the NL Wild Card race. There is great competition in our division, and in the National League, and that?s what you like to see.

I again would like to commend Commissioner Selig for having the vision to implement the wild card in baseball. There were many critics, but I liked it from the get go because it is good for baseball, and it is good for the fans. Without the wild card, many teams know they are out of the race, and the fans stop supporting their team. They lose interest, they start thinking about fantasy Maddux_fans_1 football and Labor Day barbecues. But the wild card keeps teams in the playoff hunt. In fact, let?s not forget that three of the last four World Series winners qualified for the playoffs by winning the wild card. Part of the reason for that is in order to win the wild card, you have to face steep competition. You have to beat out eight to 10 teams to qualify, but in order to win your divisions you only have to beat out four to five teams.

I urge all of the readers of this blog to continue to support your team if, or if they aren?t, in the playoff hunt. Baseball is the greatest game in the world, especially for families. Here at Dodger Stadium, which I like to call Blue Heaven on Earth, a family of four can buy 4 tickets, 4 Dodger Dogs and 4 Cokes for just 52 bucks! Try going to an NFL game for that price, or an NBA game; you can barely park for that type of money. That?s why the Dodgers are coming close to drawing 4 million fans in attendance this season, because they come to Dodger Stadium to see baseball at its best!

Alright Tommy! I can’t wait to come down and root on the boys in blue!

Another fine blog, and i’ll agree that the baseball being played at Dodger Stadium IS baseball at its best!

Tommy,

Go Jesus Christ! Go Blue! We win!

nice read Tommy.

Great sales pitch Tommy! Now put down the pom-poms and slowly back away.

We love you Tommy! You could sell ice cubes to an Eskimo! Now get out to Dodger Stadium everyone. I would if I could… Boise is a long way from LA. Go Big Blue!!

Tommy, Can’t wait to see you at Dodger staduim come October!!

4 tickets for 52 dollars! We just bought our Shea Stadium post-season tickets, and although I am walking on AIR to think of post-season play, oh Lordy the prices!!

Thanks for your fun stories, and I’ll hope for more.

http://www.pickmeup.mlblogs.com/

Love the Post Tommy,
I watched the Dodgers last night on the MLB Live Mosiac. I bought it a few weeks ago. It’s sooooo cool. Especially, during home games we get to listen to Vinny for the entire game!

I live in New Hampshire and was watching every game on CBS Sportsline game day. Just watching the stats. Then I went for MLB Live and it’s sooo awesome.

Last three games, not so awesome.

Tommy, I got two topics I wish you would address.

1. How does a team look so good for seven games then look so pitiful against a sub par team.

2. You can’t miss all the talk on ESPN about how the National league is so inferior to the American league. Yet, we get Hendrickson, who does well in the American league, and he totally stinks in the National league. Shouldn’t he be better if the National league is worse?

You’re the best Tommy…keep posting.

Has anyone noticed that since Lugo’s agent came out and blasted the Dodgers He’s gotten more playing time, but totally looked very weak? How sad he was looking so good till that happened.

Tommy, yesterday was painful to watch.
I know we won’t win every game, but we

have to not start Hendrickson again.

PLEASE use whatever influence you have to send him to the bullpen. We are only one game ahead. Yet we are so close you can taste it. We can’t risk starting Hendrickson again. Thanks. Love you and always will.

I’m a fan for 47 years.

I second that emotion. Hendrickson to the ‘pen. He’s horrible…and while your at it start playing Martinez more, Lugo and his agent can sit out a few games with the dunce hat on

Tommy… for the love of Pete! Even you have to be scratching your head of late! Please be the “special advisor to the chairman of the board” and have a sit down with Grady. Teach him that this is the time you go with your horses! This lineup shuffling is making my head spin. Where’s the consistency?? Help Tommy-Wan-Kenobi. You’re our only hope!

For the Dodgers, its getting loud at Dodger Studium, getting loud in here. All the plays , the crowd getting into it. Vin Scully still the best broadcaster in the business. Colorado Spoils LA Winning Streak at 11 Sports News by jamestowncalif.com

The LA Dodgers coming into the game with an 11 game winning streak faced off against the Colorado Rockies Wednesday Night at Dodger Stadium. What a pitching dual , it was on both sides as the game went to the late innings tied at 1. Dodgers playing some good defense. How about the play of Rafael Furcal? LA Dodgers SS 15 Rafael Furcal made 2 ESPN Top Ten plays of the day. Furcal making a high miraculous jumping catch at SS on a Highline drive “stretching leap for the grap”. Another play Furcal made was a saving throw to third getting out the tying run on a fielders choice in the 8th inning. Dodgers missed on a golden opportunity in the late 8th inning, having runners on first, and second, and pinch hitting sensation Saenz at bat takes an “inside jammer that knicked him, and He had to take a base”. Still with 1 out, and the bases loaded, the Dodgers had a golden chance to get some runs. No runs scored as Ethier grounds out for the last out,end of inning. Top 5th: Colorado

– B. Hawpe homered to deep right

Bot 5th: LA Dodgers

– D. Lowe hit sacrifice fly to center, A. Ethier scored, R. Martin to third

Top 9th: Colorado

– M. Holliday stole home, B. Hawpe stole second ( game summary ref to yahoo.com sports)

#23 Lowe pitched a great game and went almost all the way allowing only one run. Dodger relief unable to get the win. Dodger Hitting only produced 1 Run. Still the winning streak, something to be proud of. Anything over 10 wins is good, and the whole baseball world were watching to see if LA could win another game. Rockies spoil Dodgers winning streak at 11, with 2 in the nineth inning, the last run on a run down missed at the plate as the Rockies win 3-1.

Other Sports News, How about the 9th inning wins by the Royals and Reds. The Royals at home winning a thriller against the Boston Red Sox 5-4 on some late inning play. The Team looked as excited like if it were an ALSC game, but it wasnt, only a happy moment, and oh so happy, the team jumping like joy. Royals getting a run on a sacrifice fly as Manny Ramirez throws home, late , the game tied, and the team played like if it were a huge game. Next at bat, the Royals again, and to Manny again, only this time over his Head, and the winning run comes up, KC wins . The players, coaches all jumping up and down. The hats were coming off, players were tackling each other, and the gatorade was being dumped on the manager. game summery ref to yahoo.com sports

How about the Reds, being down against the St. Louis Cardinals. 9th inning with a man on base

Bot 9th: Cincinnati

And the Yankees. The Big Unit going 6 innings with a no hitter, than the White Sox being down 7-0, coming back only to lose 7-6 in a comeback, yankees holding on. The Yankees are 3 games ahead of the Boston Red Sox. The Padres losing to the Mets, thus the Dodgers still only .5 games from first. Expect the Dodgers to remain Hot. Whos Hot and Whos Not, the White Sox losing ground for battle of first place in the Central as The Detriot Tigers are rolling thus far. Now the ChiSox are 8 games from first, but still are of the top leaders for that wild card spot. How important it is to remain winning even though another team in your division is playing more outstanding baseball.

Whos Hot and Whos Not , how about the

Kansas City Royals, not hot, in fact the record is sad:

Kansas City 38 73 .342 37.0 23-33 15-40 5-20 14-31 9-14 Lost 4 3-7 winning 3 out 7, losing its last four, and 37 games from first. The Tigers and ChiSox are taking it out them all season.

Whos Hot and Whos Not

how about the West as the Oakland As and the Angels of Anaheim are battling out , like they always do as the Athletics have won 4 straight, and their pitching staff is proving strong as the season progress. As winning 8 of 10 are Hot, and the Angels of Anaheim were hot, and now are 5-5 the last ten, and that will not get it done.

Oakland 60 51 .541 — 28-25 32-26 17-12 13-16 22-13 Won 4 8-2

LA Angels 57 54 .514 3.0 27-28 30-26 16-13 17-13 17-17 Won 2 5-5

The National League, and it starts with Whos Hot and Whos not Hot, the West: How about the play and winning streak of the LA Dodgers. They havent lost since the last time jamestowncalif.com did the weekly sports story. Bring out the brooms as the Dodgers rolling their last 9, winning 9 in a row, 9 of 10.

The West West W L Pct GB Home Road East Cent West Streak L10

San Diego 58 53 .523 — 28-31 30-22 16-15 15-8 20-22 Won 2 4-6

San Francisco 53 58 .477 5.0 31-28 22-30 11-17 12-12 22-22 Won 1 2-8

The Dodgers going from last to being 2 games from first trying to make that bid for the playoffs, and oh how the city of Los Angeles enjoys having a winning baseball team, and their are some Dodger fans that really want to see the team win, and make that bid in the world series, possibly playing New York, that would be sweet, but a long shot.

Dodger baseball has been very impressive the last 10 games, and still has the top leaders in pitching stats, and middle relief for them is getting better. Hitting is also getting better, and players that werent known before are starting to get some deservant recognition like Rafael Furcal.

Whos Hot and Whos Not, how about whos not hot, the slumping SF Giants losing 8 of 10. Hey didnt I say that last week. The Giants now in the celler in the West 5 back from the leading Padres.

The Bronx Bombers with an allstar team. Johnny Damon, and Gary Sheffild, Jeter, and ARod, and Abreau, thats not right. The fans for the Yankees get to enjoy watching the best caliber of baseball players this 2006, and with that team, they are by far the best batting roster in all of baseball, and all the players above are rolling. Jeter with 144 hits this season. The Yankees this year like an MLB Dream Team, and their success depends heavily on their pitching staff. How about Robinson Cano with that .325 batting average. Good Evening, Tommy

Good Job on getting those 4 players: Pierre and Gonzalez will do well in LA. Good job on the 2 pitchers also. I look forward to the Dodgers season, and it looks good for the Blue. One request or suggestion, and this cant happen over night.

Can the Dodgers sign Ichiro from Seattle. Ichiro is by far the best player in baseball, and hes a free agent next season. Instead of the NY Yankees trying to spend more money, the Dodgers should try and sign Ichiro. The First word that I think of after the word baseball=Ichiro.

If now LA averages 46000 fans a game, with Ichiro, I guarantee, Dodger Stadium will average 70000 or more each game, if you have the parking aloud. Ichiro to LA

Sounds good. I think you can do it Tommy, find ways to bring, sign Ichiro to play in LA, and this is a kind of deal that will take a few months, but other teams cant accommidate a player like him, like the LA Dodgers can.

That would be the best move for Baseball, the National League, the City, and fans for the LA Dodgers. Good Luck, just an idea./
