Thanks to Juan Ocampo for the photo

I always said that my former players never got me a birthday gift — "not even a fruit basket." Well, Bobby Valentine remembered that and he organized this delivery for my 79th birthday on Friday. There were 79 gift baskets and each one had a great personalized message on it from one of my former players. I appreciate them for remembering, and every one of those gift baskets then went straight to the UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital. Thanks to Bobby and all you guys.

The Greatest Baseball Game Ever at Dodger Stadium by jamestowncalif.com, LA Hits 4 Solo HRs in the 9th

LA Wins With Alittle Help From Nomar 2, But……. by jamestowncalif.com

But before Nomar steals the headline, 7 Dodger Homeruns in the Game, and 4 in the bottom of the 9th inning to tie the game at 9. What an unbelievable game at Dodger Stadium on a Monday Night. It was busy like a Saturday Night, and first place was on the line in the West. The Dodgers unleash the bats, some power hitting in the most dramatic fashion and most needed time for the Team. Late inning Homeruns by Kent, J D Drew, R Martin, and Anderson, and they werent just Homeruns, they were out here. What a game at Dodgers Stadium as the Padres had the game, and the Dodgers come up big as 6 players hit Homeruns, Anderson with 2, and Nomar with the game winner with Loften on base.

The Padres go into the game a .5 ahead of the Dodgers and have beat the Dodgers all Year. The Padres have been the Dodgers toughest team, and Monday Night First place was on the line. The Padres take a 4-0 lead in the 1st inning as 8 Padres came up to bat. The Dodgers tie the game in the 3rd inning after scoring a run in the 1st, 2nd, and 2 in the 3rd. Tied at 4-4, defense takes over the game on both sides. The Padres leave the bases loaded, and then the Dodgers leave the bases loaded. Some good double plays in the middle innings, and the Dodgers had many opportunities to take the lead when the game was tied at 4. The 4-7 innings no runs were scored, and both teams had golden opportunities to break the game open. Almost like what was about to happen, the stage was setting for the later innings, and in what turn out to be LA biggest Win of the season. The Padres score 2 runs in the 8th inning, and LA scores 1 run. In the 9th inning, Dodger pitching softened and the Padres broke the game open in the 9th inning with 3 runs. The score at 9-5, and the TV cameras begin to show the Dodger players how upset they were after this seesaw game was concluding, and the Padres were about to take the series, and the Western Divison lead. The Camera passed by Nomar, and you can see how his emotions, like the rest of the team. Vin was talking about how this series isnt may be over, but the season isnt by far, and the Broadcast was already talking about the Pittsburg Pirates series coming up next.

Then the magic game, the team did something that hasnt been done in 40 years and that is to come from behind 4 runs in the 9th inning to tie with 4 straight homeruns. But this wasnt just a tie, or getting men on base, and a rally, it was all “the long ball”, and We all wished for it, wanted it, and sensed it in that 9th inning, that the game wasnt over. Jeff Kent played huge all game, on defense, making throws to first for double plays, and in the 9th inning, it was Kent that set the stage for the rest of the guys. Jeff Kent takes a pitch to the fartherest part in centerfield deep, and a homerun. He trots the bases, and the Dodgers down by 3. We wanted more, and J D Drew comes up to bat, and on the first pitch takes a pitch to right center field deep, and a homerun well into the bleachers. He smoked that Homerun, and then the rally. Still the team down by 2 runs, and their was something in the air at Chavez Ravin Monday Night, like the breeze stood still for a while, and the players could see the ball better than usual late in the game. The Dodgers in that 9th inning went up to bat to tie the game, and how they were going to do it was by the longball, and that was the most unbelievable comeback in LA Dodgers history. Russell Martin comes up to bat, and he has hit a homerun to win a game before, goes up, and hits a towering shot, and We all stood, and as soon as He hit it, We, and all the fans were going crazy. A first pitch HR off Hoffman who just came in for Adkins who just gave up the last 2 HRs. Vin said it best, the Crowd was the story tonight, in the largest Monday crowd ever at Dodger Stadium. One more, you get superstitious throughout the game, how you stand, what you talk about, and for a while that was happening, because not winning this game, and in that 9th inning, it looked like LA was going to be 1.5 games from the Padres fromn first. My headline was going to be LA gets Beat By SanDiego as the Padres are 1.5 in First. But their was this determination on the field that the players had, and provided on the field, laying everything on the line, and when that 4th homerun came, That was crazy. Jumping up and down, and the whole neighborhood could hear us, and the people watching the game with me, dont usually watch baseball, but are fans, and we watched perhaps the greatest game of the Year, and maybe of all time for a regular season game for the LA Dodgers.

And what a pick up for the Dodgers getting M Anderson as he hits a homerun early in the game, and then none bigger than that deep to right drive for a homerun that tied the game at 9 off Hoffman, and the crowd going wild all over the southland. People whom left the game and were in there cars missed a great comeback, some awesome homeruns, some power, that was the shiznet, and we couldnt believe it. The fans coming back into the game, and which ever fan that had that bad luck must have reentered the stadium , even after all that, the Padres score 1 run in the top of the 10th inning. The Dodger fans after seeing that prior inning, only a win was going to make this night special, and thats what happened. The whole team did well tonight offensively, and defensively. Loften in Centerfield making a big catch , and almost making a homerun saving catch that he stopped, and it was only a double rather than more runs coming. Loften walks in the bottom of the 10th, and being down by 1 run, Nomar takes a pitch deep to left for the Homerun, the win, and for first place . Nomar comes up huge in the 10th , and when he hit it, I stood up, he knew it, we all did. I would like to thank all the Dodgers for tonights effort, and I would like to thank Vin Scully for the awesome broadcast. You could tell being down 9-5, Vin was upset about this game, but he, and the team never gave in, and for first place, everything was laid out their on the line, in the most memorable night, a night of the longball, on a cool night at Dodgers Stadium. “The Crowd loving every moment of it, a rollercoaster ride” Vin.

LA Wins 11-10 with alittle help from Nomar, but before he made the Headlines, give credit to the other Dodgers who hit thelong ball Monday Night. Furcal, Anderson with 2, one that ties the game in the 9th, Kent, who leads off the 9th with the homerun, J D Drew, R Martin, and Nomar with the 11th inning game winning homerun that wins the game for LA against the Padres. LA Leads SD by .5 game, and SF by 4.5. LA Plays Pittsburgh Tuesday Night at Dodgers Stadium. Game probables, for the Pirates, Snell 13-10 4.78, and for the Dodgers Kuo 1-4 4.25, gametime at 7:10pt.

When you talk about character of a team, the LA Dodgers Monday Night showed alot of character. It was the greatest comefrom behind win I have ever seen, and the way it was done, it was unbelievable, remarkable. To Hit 4 solo Homeruns like that when the team was down 4, each player went up to bat with the attitude that he was going to hit it out, and boy did they ever.

What a great win for these players for the Los Angeles Dodgers whom Vin reminds us that LA is in first place in West. What a game by all the Dodger players, huge game by M Anderson. Thats what I call the longball, some power, and LA wins in the most miracolous fashion youll ever see. ” an Unusual Night” Vin. by jamestowncalif.com sports ref game probables mlb.com/losangelesdodgers, ref FSN thank you

LA Wins With Alittle Help From Nomar 3 by jamestowncalif.com

A Sunny Day in Los Angeles, a Beautiful day at the ball park, it was fan appreciation day, and the last homegame for the Dodgers this season as the season is wynding down. What an incredible game Sunday, a tight game, and decided on a grandslam homerun in the bottom of the 9th by Nomar Garciaparra taking a pitch on a 2-1 count, 2 outs deep into the bleechers in left center field. The Crowd loving it again, and as Nomar walks around the bases, the music, I Love LA, Nomar Wins the game on a Homerun late in the game once again. Arizona goes up 1-0 in the 3rd, and LA ties the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the 5th. 4 runs scored in the bottom of the 9th on one swing, and Nomar wins the game once again for the Dodgers, a much needed game as the Padres also win versus the Pirates 2-1. LA Losing Ground for 1st Place by jamestowncalif.com

The LA Dodgers have not been winning ballgames they should be winning. The D Backs win Saturday Night, and score 9 Runs with an impressive 17 Hits off the Dodgers Pitching staff. For the D Backs, Gonzalez goes 0-6, and the team with 17 hits pound the LA Dodgers pitching staff for the win. LA takes a 3-0 lead in the 1st inning, and that was it. Penny going only 5 innings, and allowing 4 Runs 9 hits, 7 Ks, and the middle relief for the team unable to shut down the D Backs. ref to yahoo.com for game summary and stats

The Padres win 2-1 against the Pirates, and now lead the West by 1.5 games. The Dodgers have been unsuccessful against subpar teams going 1 of 3 against teams like the Brewers, Cubs, Pirates, and these games are important and coming up short has cost the team the lead in the West. To add, that winning streak that was so impressive has been negated by all the games the Dodgers havent won against Teams that are below 500. On Monday Night, 4 HRs kept the Team in First Place with a Tie in the 9th, and 1 more in the 10th for the Win. Since Monday Nights Game the team pitching staff have been rocked by the opposing teams that have come into Dodger Stadium as spoilers. LA needs to go back on another winning streak, take one game at a time, and not allow these teams that are below 500 to win, and now the Dodgers are 1.5 games behind in first place, as not to long ago, the team put together 2 winning streaks that were impressive, and what got the Team into the position for first place. This team has the ability to Win it all, but before the team can make it to the playoffs, you have to win the ball games for the rest of the season, and put together another winning streak, winning streaks, winning 2/3 against the teams , winning streaks down the stretch till the playoffs. Its now or never for the Dodgers. This not winning against teams below 500 is unacceptable, and the team pitching staff needs to pitch tighter, harder, and the offense needs to go up with the attitude like they did in that 9th inning Monday. The Team plays good defense, and has been all season. The Dodgers infield is its strength, and have come up with game winning and saving double plays all season, but now its time for the pitching staff to do their jobs, and start pitching harder, and not let these hitters hit off them. LOB 5, thats it 5, and with 7 hits and J D Drew had 3 hits, and thats not going to get it done. The Dodger offense was as bad as the Dodger middle relief Saturday Night as the Team goes to 1.5 games from the Padres.

The 1981 LA Dodgers by jamestowncalif.com

One of the Greatest Teams of all of baseball, the 81 LA Dodgers. It was a unique time, and baseball may not have had a team with overall character and charisma as this 81 LA Dodgers. The NLCS, that game against the Montreal Expos set the stage for the team, the World Series as Rick Monday takes a pitch deep in the rightcenter field seats giving LA the lead in the top of the last inning against the Expos, and the Dodgers held on to win. I remember that game like Yesterday in grade school, our teacher would have a little TV for us to watch the games towards the end of the season. Everyone followed the Dodgers that Year, and that year the fans hadnt experienced such a good team.It all started with the manager, and Tommy Lasorda that year pushed that team hard, and it was successful. Hed oftentimes come out to the mound just to give the umpire a piece of his mind, and those days, it was funny. You had Steve Garvey at First. Dave Lopez at 2nd, and you had rookie sensation Steve Sax.Bill Russell at short Stop. Ron Cey, the Penguin, at 3rd base. Steve Sax was a great baseball player. In the outfield, you had Pedro Guerrerro who was new to the league, and a very great baseball player. In Center , Ken Landreaux, and he was the outfielder that made the last catch against the New York Yankees game 6 for the World Series. In Right, you had Dusty Baker. All these players made huge hits allthroughout the 81 season, NLCS, and the World Series. The Dodgers had 2 catchers, Steve Yeagar and Mike Schocia whom now is the manager of the Angels of Anaheim , the 2002 World Series Champions. The Pitching staff, it started with Rookie Sensation, Fernando Valenzuela number 34. He came in the league, and took over baseball at the time winning 9 in row. He had a screw ball that sank, and not a hitter at the time was able to hit off him. He also had a good fastball. A true Lefthander, perhaps one of the best pitchers of all time. It was Fernando Valenzuelas performance on a Friday Night pitching Dou winning for the Dodgers in a tight game as LA was down 0-2 going to LA for 3. Huge win for the Dodgers, and Valenzuela was a huge part of that win in the world series. Being down 0-2, the Dodgers needed a pitching performance like that one.( I saw all the world series games). The style, the pressure of the moment that game was big. Saturday, the teams came out early on a sunny day. The craziest game of the series as the lead changed all throught the game. Reggie Jackson was unable to make a routine catch on fly ball due to the sun, and he couldnt come up with it. Dave Winfield for the Yankees was their New AROD coming from the Padres, and He couldnt hit the whole series, and the LA pitching staff shut Winfield down all series. It was funny watching how Winfield was the only Yankee who just couldnt get a hit. And then that game Sunday, Rich Gossage, the Goose, or Goose Goosage. At the time, the Yankee reliever was at the top of the game, and he would come in and throw some heat, 100 mph pitches blowing hitters away. Some Key HRs by Pedro, Steve Yeagar, and in close game the Dodgers win to go ahead in the series 3-2. In that game Sunday, Ron Cey is at bat, and Rich Gossage throws a pitch as fast as a lightning bolt that sailed, and hit Ron Cey in the Head. Cey was down, and all the fans, viewers were all watching to see. After the game, their was an incident between Yankees owner, and some others as the Yankees came in 2-0 are now going back 2-3. And the Next game, it was all Dodgers winning big, with some Homeruns from Cey, Guerrero, and Yeagar. and the Yankees were never in that one. At the time, the Yankees and the Dodgers players didnt like one another, and this was a grudeworldseries more than anything. Everything was laid out on the line on the field that series. It was redemption for the Dodgers after losing to the Yankees in the 78 World Series, now to win in the 81 World Series, it was the sweatest win in the LA franchise at the time. One of the greatest teams of all times, the 81 Dodgers from the owner , to the manager, to the team, and of course Vin Scully as the Broadcaster along with Ross Porter. The best headline for that World Series, The LA Dodgers Smoke the New York Yankees 4 Straight games to Win the 1981 World Series. It was a great time for LA. I would like to thank you by jamestowncalif.com

You look back, and how important the managers starting pitching rotation was. Bob Welch, Burt Hooton lost at New York in the first two games. Having Valenzuela start in LA game 3 rather than in New York Won the series, and His pitching Game 3 turned the series around. Tom Lasorda had a good pitching staff at the time. Jerry Reuss and Steve Howe also were keys to the success of the team in 81.

Dodgers to hold reunion for World Series champs on Saturday

By Barry M. Bloom / MLB.com

Happy Birthday Tommy! I hope that you have a great day man!

Regarding Lasorda’s birthday a major sports publication printed from the b-day card from baseball great and former Dodger Bill Buckner to Lasorda: “You taught me how to play the game and you made me love the game. You were like a father to me.”

Proof that Buckner was another exceptional ballplayer produced by Lasorda’s early ’70′s crop was Charlie Lau’s hitting instructional book. The book used Buckner’s hitting method as an exemplar, along with players like G. Brett, Pete Rose and Steve Garvey for youth baseball players, around 1980.

Buckner hit over well over .300 a few times – almost always around .300 and he was an RBI machine.

LA Wins In a Nailbitter, Now Tied For 1st Place in the West by jamestowncalif.com

LA Wins 4-3 versus San Fransisco in a nailbitter. A good baseball game, very competitive as the Giants are trying to play spoiler. The Dodgers pitching staff was strong in the biggest moments of the game. Early on, Starting pitcher Kou made some inning ending strike outs that were big. The way the batter looks after he gets struck out without a swing is one of baseballs best parts of the game as the players walk towards the dug out after the inning ending strike out. It was Dodger baseball, Kou with some early and key strikouts to end innings early on. A Classy team and group , the LA Dodgers, and Friday Nights win demonstrated alot of character in the players, indviduals, and the pitching was great on the key strike outs, and at bats. Bonds goes down on strikes 2 times. The Giants take a 3-0 lead, and SF starting pitcher Lowry pitched very well. Almost a perfect game, Lowry had 4 Ks, but made one bad pitch, and that was a hanging curve ball that J D Drew hits out for a Homerun and out of the ballpark, a Towering shot by J D Drew, and momentum was changing in the game from their. LA down 3-2 in the Top of the 9th inning, get 2 runners on base early. Pinch Hitter, and game MVP, Olmedo Saenzs hits a single to right field that ties the game at 3-3. Olmedo also known as Tomato Sause takes off his hat, at age 36 , that basehit huge. Seanz takes his hat off , and has the same haircut style and color grey as the Tonight Show Host J Leno.

Like a TV re-enactment, Leno gets a basehit to right after fighting off a pitch, and flares it to right, and a run scores for the tie at 3. The crowd goes wild, Hey thats not Olmedo Saenz, thats Jay Leno, No thats a guy that looks like Leno, Olmedo Saenz game MVP walks off the field and is pinched ran for. LA Takes the lead on a wild pitch by Stanton , with R Martinez at the plate, and Martin scores the run, LA goes up 4-3.

With Saito going for the save, SF gets two men on base. With 1 out, and runners at the corners, a huge play defensively by R Martinez just inserted into the game, and lineup as he makes a difficult catch on a foul ball that was in the stands, a Top Ten Play of the Day , that catch for the second out, and the runner from 1st tags to 2nd base. Saito pitching some heat in the bottom of the 9th inning, was in trouble early, but holds on striking out Sweeney on a wicked curve ball looking, and the game ends like that, Dodgers Win, and the fans at home, and their were fans from here in SF going wild, YEAH, Thats what I am talking about, one of LAs best shows of the Year, a big win for the LA Dodgers. The D Backs win 3-1 versus the Padres, and now LA has Tied San Diego for 1st place with 2 games to go.
