CHiPs

badge.jpgLast night I was driving home down the 5 South and was pulled over by the California Highway Patrol.  Since I was on the 5 you know I could not have been speeding because it is the worst freeway in the world.  Most of the time I wish they would just blow it up and start over because it is brutal.

When the officers came to my car I wondered why they were pulling me over.  Perhaps they were Giants fans.  Or maybe they are sons of a couple umpires I used to get on back in the day.

They told me I was swerving.

Swearing at the bad drivers cutting me off?  Maybe.  But I wasn’t swerving.

I told them I didn’t have anytihng to drink, and in the middle of my sentence the officer recognized me.

I ended up chatting with the two officers, signing pictures for their families, I talked to one of their mothers and made sure they loved the Dodgers.

My point is that they did their job, and they did it well.  People never give law enforecment the credit and respect they so richly deserve.  I would like to congratulate those two officers on representing themselves, their families and the CHP to the highest degree of class, dignity and character.

Speaking of “CHiPs”, I seem to recall Tommy making an appearance on the old TV show in the early ’80s’. If memory serves correctly, I believe the two main characters, Jon and Ponch, pull Tommy over for some reason just like he described this real life experience except that he’s wearing his Dodger jacket when he gets out of the car. Then, when he tries to prove to Jon and Ponch that he’s Tommy Lasorda, he turns around to show his last name on the back of his jacket… except it doesn’t say “Lasorda”… it has “Valenzuela” on the back of it…. then Tommy mutters something about “Jay Johnstone” must have switched his jacket on him as a joke… at least that’s how I remember Tommy’s “CHiPs” cameo… I hope I remembered it correctly or I have a crazy imagination, Tommy!
