Hey Fidel, remember when we beat you in the Olympics? @USABaseball –
Here is my story that aired last night on 790 KABC as part of the Lasorda at His Best Series presented by Skechers:
People ask me, and my wife even asked me, why I wanted to coach the U.S. Olympic baseball team. I told her because we needed to beat Cuba. They won every international tournament; nobody was able to beat them.
I took the job specifically to beat Cuba.
People told me that I didn’t have a good team. They told me we could not beat Cuba.
“Have they ever lost a game?” I asked.
They said yes.
“Then they are going to lose again!”
And that’s exactly what happened. We beat Cuba to win our country’s first, and only, Gold Medal in Olympic baseball.
We had some outstanding players on the team. But when they reported to me they were all in the low minor leagues. One player I liked very much was Roy Oswalt. He is what I call a bulldog. When he was on the mound he gave it everything he had; he was tough. He is an outstanding competitor and I am proud to see him succeed in the Major Leagues.
