I love telling my stories on 790 KABC @KABCStudio:
Here is my story that aired last night on 790 KABC as part of the Lasorda at His Best series presented by Skechers:
I was in New York to make a speech. I have a friend in New York who owns a jewelry store named Rocco. I’m with Rocco and I see all these police and some of the guys with the police recognize me.
“What’s going on here?” I ask. And they tell me President Bush was in New York.
I told Rocco that if he knew I was across the street and didn’t try to get in tough with him, he would be upset.
“Get out of here,” Rocco said. “You don’t know President Bush.”
“President Bush is a friend of mine, Rocco,” I said.
“If he really is a friend of yours I’ll bet you $200 you can’t get in that hotel to see him.”
“You’re on, Rocco.”
I called the hotel and asked if they saw any of the president’s secret service in the lobby, and they did.
“Would you mind telling one of them to tell the president that I would like to see him?”
They out me on the elevator, went up to the penthouse, walked in and shook hands with the president. He gave me a hug and introduced me to a man named General Scowcroft. We visited for a bit.
I went back down the elevator and over to see Rocco. He had a check ready for me for $200, which I ripped up.
“Rocco,” I said. “I knew I was going to win the bet.”
