My 75 prive pupils:
Here is my story that aired yesterday on 790 KABC as part of the Lasorda at His Best series presented by Skechers:
When I managed in the minor leagues I would tell my players that when I send them to the big leagues it will be like the guy in Carnegie Hall giving a great performance. He gets a standing ovation, and up in the balcony there a man with a tear in his eye. It’s his father; the man who motivated him, who made him achieve his goals.
When I send you to Dodger Stadium, just remember, there’s old Tom in Albuquerque with a tear in his eye.
In the eight years I managed in the minor leagues I sent 75 players to the big leagues. When I took over as Manager of the Dodgers 17 of the 25 players played for me in the minor leagues.
We had a great minor league system. We developed the players ourselves. We didn’t have to sign free agents. We had them right there in our minor league system ready to play at Dodger Stadium. And when they did come to the big leagues they stayed a long time
