Second to Nun:
Here is my story that aired yesterday on 790 KABC as part of the Lasorda at His Best series presented by Skechers:
Down in Nashville, Tennessee I have a good friend by the name of John Hobbs. He told me about these nuns who were living in a convent that was 98 years old, and it was condemned. They had to move out. I asked him what they were going to do with the nuns and he told me they would put a couple here, a couple there and so on.
“No John,” I said. “These nuns should all be together. Let’s build them a new convent.”
We decided to a have big night to raise money to build the convent for the nuns. I told him that after the season ended I would come down to Nashville. I had dozens of signed baseballs that we could auction, make a lot of money and build them a convent.
We made a deal with the director of Hee Haw. We filled the Grand Ole Opry and put on a tremendous show.
I had all the nuns sitting in the front row with me. When it was over they asked me to get on stage a say a few words. I took all the nuns with me. This one little, old nun paid me probably the greatest compliment I ever received.
She put her arms around me and said, “I wish I could have met you before I entered the convent.”
