The "S" Word: Slump
Every team in baseball will go into a slump. Some slump early in the season, some in the middle and some in the end. I’ve been through all three types, and believe me, it’s much better to slump early because you will play good baseball for the rest of the summer and be ale to make a run at the post season.
One year my team had lost seven in a row, and after that seventh loss they were all hanging their heads in the clubhouse feeling sorry for themselves. I told them to pick their heads up; they weren’t losing because of lack of hustle, they just weren’t getting the breaks.
I knew I needed to address the team and stop the snowball from becoming an avalanche, so I told them just a few weeks prior, all the sportswriters got together and voted the 1927 Yankees as the best team in the history of baseball. Then I told my players they had nothing to worry about because the 1927 Yankees lost nine in a row.
Driving home with my wife, she asked me why I took so long after the game, and I told her about addressing the team and about the 1927 Yankees.
We turned a corner and won nine in a row. After our ninth win, I was driving home wife my wife and she said, “Remember when you told your players about the 1927 Yankees?”
“Yes,” I replied.
“Was that true,” she asked. And I answered, “How should I know, that was the year I was born!”
The point is fans have to remember all teams go into slumps. It’s not because they aren’t playing hard, or executing the fundamentals. In fact, before the season even starts, you are garuanteed to lose one third of yours games, which is 54. You are gauranteed to win one third of your games, which is 54. But it’s that middle third that will determine the fate of your ball club.
Where the team finishes in the standings depends on the chemistry of the team, the manager and the coaches. It depends on how badly the players want to taste the fruits of victory.
Fans have to be patient through slumps. They have to stick with their team through the good times and the bad. There has never been any doubt in my mind that we have the greatest fans in all of baseball. In fact, on opening day, Guinness World Records presented Frank McCourt and the Dodgers with an award proclaiming that we have had more fans in attendance than any other professional sports franchise. Now that is the mark of good fans!
I know our club will turn around, and continue to play exciting, competitive baseball for the rest of the summer.
This is LA baseball.
Hi, Tommy!
On the KFWB sports news one day this week, A Martinez reported that after the game Jeff Kent remained in the batting cage, working on his hitting.
With a work ethic like that, how can we remain in a slump?

Tommy,
I agree about the fans. Eight years ago My family moved to Iowa, not exactly the Dodger's fan capital of the US. But thanks to the internet and ESPN Wednesday(lately) I still fallow the team religiously.

i checked for you on the 1927 Yankees. The longest streak of losses that they had was 4 in August. They also had one streak of 3 losses in early summer and ( i think) 5 consecutive losses.

I was talking to my best friend today at lunch about why I HAVE to watch the Dodgers every night they play (and the MLB Extra Innings broadcast the games if ESPN or ESPN2 doesn't) and his statement to me was "why watch if you know they're (the Dodgers) going to lose" and my response was that A) I don't think the Dodgers are going to lose any night that I tune in and B) I would watch them every night if they lost 160 games a year because that's what real fans do. They don't quit on the team if the team hasn't quit and I see no quit in my Dodgers. So even though I'm WAY over here on the East Coast in beautiful NC, I'm still thinking GO BLUE!

the Dodgers are a great team, I think they will come back
I was wondering what you think about the race in the NL West and also what you think about the barrier beetween the fans and the players, does the field need to be farther away from the fans?

Awesome Tommy. Great to connect with you this way. I was just saying to my Dodger buddy here at work today that sometimes when things aren't going your way you have to see things the way you want to see them and then things will turn around. It's like a family member who you are perhaps at a distance with and it comes birthday time and you don't feel like sending them a card. I said go ahead and send the card to the person you would like them to be. Give them the benefit of the doubt. After all they are family. It is just how I feel about the Dodgers. Been a fan over fifty years. Hate the Giants like crazy. it's madness, it's great.

Hey Tommy,
I agree completely with what you say about slumps, it's completely true. Every team will go in to a slump eventually during the season, but what I'm seeing from our boys in blue looks to me to be a little more than a slump. We're playing competitive ball every night but we aren't winning because of the little things not being done. We aren't moving runners over, we aren't throwing strikes when we need to, and other things. It just seems as if our style is whats holding us back. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge Dodgers fan, I bleed Dodger blue, but it seems like since last year, the team intensity has backed off. Our playing style isn't aggressive enough, it's too passive. Shouldn't we start looking into hit and runs, stealing bases, squeeze plays, and more? Let me know what you think, thanks!

Although I'm your senior by one year, I think you are the best manager the Dodgers have ever had, and that includes some supr people as you know. I remember Ernie Koy, and Van Lingle Mungo, and Babe Phelps, Durocher, and others, and how tough it was to be a fan of the absolutely worst team in New York. But Branch Rickey came along, and things got better, lots better. We had Snider and Furillo, and Campanella, and Reese and Reiser and Hodges, and then it was OUR turn to laugh at the other New York teams. As they say, what goes around, comes around. Hopefully the present management has the samne dedication to the game as those of the past, and the Dodgers will rise to the heights once more. GOD Bless You, and thanks for all the marvelous thrills Dodger Baseball has given me in my lifetime.

I love baseball. I was in the Dodger stadium a while back. Nice place. Has a little history. I have season tickets to watch the greatest bunch of new major league players-The Texas Rangers. Rangers have been in a little slump, I think Lasorda hits it on the mark about "Where the team finishes in the standings depends on the chemistry of the team, the manager and the coaches. It depends on how badly the players want to taste the fruits of victory."
With all due respect, I love to hate the Dodgers and Lasorda because you are winners that never go away! God bless you Tommy and thanks for your dedication to baseball.

I was born a Dodger fan despite living in the San Fransisco Bay Area. The slump the Giants going through are so bad, I feel instantly better about what the Dodgers are going through. I agree that it is the charater of the team that will pull them out of the slump. A great athlete once said: "To give anything less than your best is to sacrafice the gift."

S is for Slump, and Scott Erickson. Sorry Scott, you're done. With a team high ERA of 7.17, you should retire, I've seen too many games get away with you on the mound. I'd rather see a rookie come in and give up home runs. I can deal when Geo blows it, cause we've seen him perform very well for the Dodgers in the recent past. But you've never proven yourself and you haven't yet. Time to go, bye bye...

Tommy,
I had the great misfortune of traveling from OKC to KC to see my team of 51 years play ball. I have never seen such an uninspired bunch of ballplayers ever! They should be glad they don't have their names on the back of their uniforms. I wouldn't want anybody to know who I was either! This team obviously is just playing for a paycheck. Let's bring up some AAA & AA players with some love of the sport as I've heard you preach many times. This is much more than a slump, Tommy. This team needs a good kick in the rear!! Is this team playing for the LA morgue or the LA Dodgers?? Please let me know so I can quit lighting candles at my church, in hopes of a miracle.

I was in Chicago for the heartbreaking loss in game two against the Sox last Saturday. It's sad to see such a team taking a beating, but it's good to consider the long run. The Dodgers will break out of their slump. Many of the eight men on the DL right now will return and solidify the Dodgers lineup. We just have to give it time and not get discouraged...but it sure is hard, isn't it?

I agree with alot of the comments I have read. The Dodgers are playing with very little emotion and I am affraid they will dig to big a hole to climb out of when the DL players return. Depodesto made a big mistake, in my opinion, when he traded the heart and soul of the Dodgers, Paul LoDuca

Coach,
While the current Dodger's are in this slump, I would like to remind you and myself of what I remember as the glory days! Living in NC we had to travel to Atlanta to watch Dodgers, and nothing pleased me more than watching our team pound the home team into submission. By the end of the game, the only fans there were were wearing Dodger blue. Garvey hitting bombs out of Fulton County like it was a little league field and Fernando strolling out to the mound with his chest poking out, the Braves didn't have a chance. I can't wait to the current regime can get a team together like that. Go Big Blue!

HI Tommy:
As a 50 year fan of the Dodgers and a season ticket holder I would like to thank you for your contributions to the Dodgers and the game. I have listened to you deal with the media over the years and you have always been a master at keeping things on a positive track. Todays paper says that Jason Phillips called the fans idiots and advocated that a fan should have elbowed Luis Gonzales for going into the stands to rob him of a home run. Can you teach a class in how to deal with the media to Mr. Phillips?

In a year such as this when the entire lineup is almost destroyed by injuries, isn't this a time to see our prospects and not trade away the family farm, after all we could only get a good pitcher and bat at best and with our injuries that would not be enough. Let's see all the futures we got!!!

Now we are behind the Giants too.
This is embarassing.
Why is Grabowski still in the majors? The Mendoza line would
be really a great jump up for him. Why are you waiting so long to look at our other left hand hitting outfielders in the organization?
Surely, we have seen enough of him.
Report any abuse or spam
Haven't we finally seen enough of Yhency Brazoban? Why is Tracy still trying to use him as a closer? The only real pitch he has is his fastball and batters are chomping at the bits wanting to get in there and sit on dead red. And I think there's problems with his mechanics that teams are also picking up on to know what's coming. I wish Tracy would use Sanchez for a closer instead of Brazoban.
I think Brazoban should have packed his bags and left with Grabowski. And I also think Tracy should have packed and left with them. I still question his ability to make good decisions when the game is on the line. I see questionable decisions time after time after time with Tracy.
The game last night with the Phils was a perfect example of the mistakes Tracy keeps making over and over again.
The Dodgers need a change and I think the first one needs to be to remove Tracy and create a fresh atmosphere in the clubhouse.

It's very easy to point fingers when your team has lost a game, especially when they let one slip away that could have easily been won if the manager had made a few sound and very simple decisions.
Sometimes it becomes necessary to point fingers whether the team wins or loses.
Such is the case with what's going on right now on the Dodgers ball club.
We see a continous pattern now game after game after game with teams finally realizing what we've known since early on - we don't have a competent closer, and we don't have a catcher who can throw someone out trying to steal any base, even by calling for a pitch-out.
I don't think phillips could throw his own grandma out even by calling for a pitch-out. And teams are fired up because of it and running at will. It's opened up a can of worms. They are fired up when they are on base just like they are when they go up to the plate facing Brazoban trying to close out a game in the final inning when they know the one pitch that he is confident in is his 97 mph fastball. And they sit on dead red.
I don't know if management thinks they can actually win the West playing below 500 ball. If they do, it's going to be a very loud slap when reality strikes.
So if things don't change quickly, and I mean "tonight," beginning with the series with the Cards, it will be a long, long weekend for not only the fans of Dodger blue, but the team as well.
We are already seeing frustration set in by some of the best players on the team because of the irrational decisions made by Jim Tracy.

I just want to say that we all know this has been a difficult time for our Los Angeles Dodgers. It seems that there is always adversity that follows adversity and there is no way out.Maybe we have to believe in something greater than us to get everything in order!I am a Canadian but I am also your brother, fellow American!50 OF THE 56 FOUNDING FATHERS THAT SIGNED THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDANCE WERE CHRISTIANS WHO HAD FAITH IN GOD AND THAT ALL MEN WERE CREATED EQUAL!IN CANADA WE HAD STRONG CHRISTIAN INFLUENCE AS WELL!It says in the holy book that we should ask God to forgive us as we forgive the trespasses against us!THIS IS VERY HARD TO DO, BUT WITH PROPER GUIDANCE AND FAITH IT CAN BE DONE!Milton Bradley you are a great ball player that will be greatly missed,as all the other players that are hurt and wanting to play. All our prayers are with you!THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS NOT THAT YOU HAVE TO WIN THE PENNANT,BUT IS IS THAT YOU TRULY,TRULY WORKED TOGETHER AS A TEAM TO DO THE ABSOLUTE BEST THAT YOU CAN BOTH PLAYING ABILITY WISE AND CHARACTER,FOR THAT IS WHERE YOUR TRUE STRENGTH COMES FROM!All the best to both teams tonight!

Our Los Angeles Doddgers have posted a good and very interesting line up today! It is good to see Sandy Koufax on the Dodger website commenting on the 1955 Brooklyn Dodger championship team!Sandy Koufax truly was one of a kind!He had to be, if not the greatest pitcher of all time, one of the greatest pitchers of all time!
Truly a legend never to be forgotten for all the thrills he gave Dodger fans in his career!Way to go,Sandy! All the best to both teams today!

Jayson Werth you are not humble enough and you don't have your heart in the right place to play this game! You can handle the Chicago Cubs ah?They have a better record
than us!As I stated to Milton Bradley earlier in the year,if you don't respect all of your opponents you don't respect yourself. How could you make so terrible a judgement in character!Character is missing on this team!

Always respect your opponents is the number 1 rule if you are to be a Championnship Team!Any demeaning remarks about the other team is breaking spiritual law and you light a fire on the other team!A haughty spirit comes before a fall and pride brings destruction. The most imprtant thing on the Team is perfect character! It is not too late and we want to remind you guys that all the Los Angeles Dodgers Fans are with you all the way!All the best to both teams tonight!

Couple of major things! It was great that the 1955 Dodgers were honored!Johnny Podres,Don Newcombe,Pee Wee Reese,Duke Snyder etc.,they were all great players and they deserve great accolades. But you know what,it grieved me that Vince Scully did not say all the statistics for Sandy Koufax!Sandy Koufax,I'll say it again, could have been the greatest pitcher of all time, and he was a true Los Angeles Dodger. When he was on the mound, it was like his name and the Los Angeles Dodgers was perfect and his high degree of excellency along with his team through the annals of time, probably will not be surpassed!I hope that there is no rift between Sandy Koufax and the Los Angeles Dodgers and I hope that the Los Angeles Dodgers will give Sandy Koufax his true due and remembering him and his team as one of the greatest ever and not taking anything away from the 1955 Los Angeles Dodgers World Series Chamionship team, for they were truly a great, great team!Congratulations to our Los Angeles Dodgers for their 7-0 victory over the Chicaco Cubs, wishing them the best in their future endeavours!Speaking of excellence,Derek Lowe you are following in the great Sandy Koufax's footsteps with your fantastic one hitter, and all around courageous, championship form and character!Keep believing greater, always having the great Los Angeles Dodger tradition in your hearts, and all will be well! All peace and joy to evryone!

Paul Depodesta made a great move in acquiring Jose Cruz Jr.as his display at the plate,on the base paths and in the field,in support of Derek Lowe, shows that he can do it all and is playing in true champiosnship form at the right time this late in the year!Keep it up Jose Cruz Jr. and Paul Depodesta, absolutely fantastic!

Ultra congratulations to our Los Angeles Dodgers for their
great 3-1 victory over the San Diego Padres!Derek Lowe your World Series Championshop pitching should be fed off by the rest of the pitching staff to finish this season the right way!Fantastic congratulations to manager Jim Tracy for trying to put the best line up for victory under tremendous pressure and adversity.Jim,you are truly proving you are a great manager and that you heart is in the right place as you are a true Los Angeles Dodger manager!7 games out with 21 games to go is a tall order but have faith in one another and nothing is impossible who believes! All peace and joy to everyone!

Wow,what an amazing 7- 3 victory for our Los Angeles Dodgers over the San Diego Padres as we hope the best for them the remainder of the season!Brad Penny, you struggled in the first inning
but, again, you showed the heart and courage of your teammate Derek Lowe in championship form blanking the next five innings!Dioner Navarro fantastic performance!
If we are going to run on the other team, let us always have the respect of the other team, and never do it in arrogance or to run up the score. The respect of the other team has always got to be in our mind!Wille Alybar's presence in the leadoff position is a fantastic decision and the dividends are already paying off!Jose Cruz Jr.,very clutch home run!
Giovanni Carrera and Yhency Brazoban absolutely fantastic jobs!Gentleman,we are six games out with 20 to go!I don't know the full story with Milton Bradley but root for your teamates Milton, for you are still part of the team!JD Drew,Odalis Perez, etc.,hope you all get better
for we are in this all together! It looks like something wonderful is happening to the team and let's always remember "Ain't no mountain high enough or valley low enough" that this Los Angeles Dodger Team can't overcome! All peace and joy to everyone tonight!

Extraordinary 7-0 victory for our Los Angeles Dodgers over the Colorado Rockies!Certainly Jeff Weaver one of your great performances as we wind up the season in championship form!Absolutely fantastic,Jeff Weaver!Willie Aybar,as well, fantastic start to your career as a Los Angeles Dodger!Your 3 for 5 at the plate was exceptionnal, and your presence in the leadoff position is remarkable as well as your fielding!Dioner Navarro, your 3 for 4 at the plate and your expertise at catcher by throwing out the runner, shows your concentration at a very high level, well desrving of high praise! And of course ,Superman Mr. Indestructable Jeff Kent for his 2 stolen bases,2 for 4 night, with a run scored and 1 RBI, and his Hall of Fame presence on the team is always there and to the rest of Our Los Angeles Dodgers who were great!Keep the wonderful spirit on the team now, and with 19 games to go,we are only 5 games out and keep believing in each other! All peace and joy to everyone!

As upmost respect for our opponents, we shouldn't put Dodgers rout Rox on Dodgers.com.Yes,we did win and that's how we should put it without any arrogance which is in the word rout!To be perfect in character is just as or even more important than to be perfect in baseball! All the best to both teams tonight!

Very disheartening 6-4 loss but congratulations to the Colorado Rockies on their victory over our Los Angeles Dodgers!Edwin Jackson Jr.,you can't go into a game of this magnitude and pitch like that!
Talk to the big boys, meaning Derek Lowe,Jeff Weaver or Brad Penny so you will know what your doing out there! You seemed lost out there! You can also speak to Jim Colburn! There are only 18 games left so you cannot go out there again in the same fashion and let your teammates down!Communicate!Communicate!Communicate!DJ Houlton, follow this advice for you cannot follow suit with Edwin's performance. You have what it takes to be a great pitcher!Pitch with confidence and remember the magnitude of the game for we can't afford any more sloppy games!C'mon now, because you guys can do it!Jim Tracy you have to start to look at Antonio Perez
as a starter, his bat is still much needed in the lineup. His bat is too good for him to be on the bench!18 games to go and 5 games out!We can't afford any bad pitched games anymore, this is the bottom line! The 4th and 5th starter have to realiize the seriousness of the sitauation! All peace and joy to everyone!

Jim Tracy, how could you leave DJ HOULTON IN THE GAME AFTER 2 VISITS TO THE MOUND!You were asking for trouble and you got it!I try to encourage the team all the time, and look what you do!Your HEAD is not in the game totally, you cost this game!I AM A REALLY DISCOURAGED AND DISHEARTENED FAN.

This e-mail is directed at Jim Tracy.I have a business right now and I have a partner
and I have learned in life 2 heads are better than one!As per my last email,I know that leaving in DJ Houlton was a mistake and that cost us the game maybe the season!I hope that you read this email. You have made some good decisions and not so good decisions.Take My advice, here, and apply with your good decisions and the Los Angeles Dodgers will give their best shot!Take Oscar Robles out and put in Antonio Perez in the second spot in the batting order! We will have a very potent batting attack with Willy Aybar and then Antonio Perez.Although Oscar Robles is a better fielder,Antonio Perez is batting .315 and with all the one run games his bat would make the difference!Oscar Robles has done a great job and he will be useful still in the late innings!Putting in Jason Repko was a mistake.Jayson Werth's presence and bat are too powerful to keep him out of the line up!Jason Repko is a very good player and he is still young and his time will come!Make these 2 moves and our Los Angeles Dodgers could still make a run for it!Starting Elmer Dessens today is a great decision! What I am saying is that with 14 games to go, and all the low 1 run losses, having Willy Aybar and then Antonio Perez next, you will create havoc for the other team!WE HAVE THE PITCHING, USE ALL THE BEST BATS WE GOT!6.5 games out with 14 games to go seems impossible, but I believe if these 2 moves are made,we could go on long winning streak! All the best to both teams today and peace and joy to everyone!

I just wanted to post this email to encourage our Los Angeles Dodgers that all the Los Angeles Dodger fans will be there in spirit in Arizona knowing that you will play your best baseball in these last 13 games. The fact that Odalis Perez might pitch is a great bolster to the pitching staff as he is a left hander
and is very good pitcher!Even though we are eight games out with 13 to go, let's finish off the season in championship form and keep believing for this year!
For when the mountain to overcome is the highest, the desire and fire of our Los Angeles Dodger Tradition in our hearts is the greatest! All peace and joy to everyone!

I am rooting for you guys, but Antonio Perez batting .314 should be behind Willy Aybar.
We'd ignite a fire on the team.Nothing against Oscar Robles he has done a great job,but we desperately need Antonio Perez's bat.

Antonio Perez did play shortstop!I don't know about his arm but I do know about his bat.Jim Tracy is talking about second place, well,he better worry about the Colorado Rockies.Oscar Robles is not hitting!I don't understand why he doesn't put Antonio Perez second beside Willy Aybar!Antonio Perez is a far superior hitter to Robles!Antonio's played shortstop before.I don't understand!
Report any abuse or spam
Jim Tracy, why don't you try Antonio Perez, playing shortstop batting second behind Willy Aybar!Apparently his arm is not that strong and maybe you lack confidence putting him in.With 10 games to go,give it a try! You'll have 2 hitters batting over .300 to set up for Superman,Mr. Indesctructable,Jeff Kent and the rest of the big boys!Antonio Perez's bat will more than make up for his defence and running shortcommings.Besides,he will get better at these if you play him!Oscar Robles has done well but the team is in a slump and we need Antonio's bat to give us the best chance for victory and break the slump! If you did this, even though I don't like to make predictions,I think we would win tonight!Jim,since two heads are better than one,why don't you hire me as your assistant manager! All the best to both teams tonight!

Congratulations to our Los Angeles Dodgers for their hard earned 4-3 victory for the game Pittsburgh Pirates.First of all,Antonio Perez should not have been replaced by Oscar Robles because the score was only 4-2,that's why these are nervous victories! If we were 5 runs up,no problem, because if Pittsburgh ties it up our potential to comeback is greatly minimized! The top 3 of Wille Aybar,Antonio Perez and Superman Jeff Kent is one of the top in baseball, although Mr.Indestructable is needed batting fourth depending on the circumstance!I would take Antonio Perez over Cesar Izturis.DJ Houlton you have great potential to be a great pitcher!Duaner Sanchez, stop making us nervous!Good to see Odalis Perez pitching tomorrow! All the best to both teams tomorrow and all peace and joy to everyone!

Congratulations to the Pittsburgh Pirates on their well deserved 8-3 victory over our Los Angeles Dodgers.
Elmer Dessens and Jonathan Broxton disappointed tonight. Our bats didn't have it tonight!I believe that this line up is ready to break out and start to score many runs!Let's try for at least 75 victories and finish the season like champions to set the winning tone for next year! All peace and joy to everyone!

Congratulations on our Los Angeles Dodgers for the superb 9-2 break out victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.I hope Antonio Perez's injury is not serious!Oscar Robles had a great day so maybe the insertion of Antonio Perez in the line up raised Oscar Robles'play up to the maximum! It is good Superman Jeff Kent got the day off as we want him healthy for next year!Maybe we are going to finish like we started as Yhency Brazoban closed out the game in fine fashion!Let's go for 76 victories, you guys can do it!All peace and joy to everyone!

Too bad Antonio Perez couldn't play. His bat is the difference in these ball games.Oscar Robles does not hit good enough as he is now only batting .268, whereas Antonio Perez is .310 hitter.
Cesar Izturis is not good enough bat wise!Get better,Antonio! All peace and joy to everyone!
